Roll up for the magical mystery tour

Gentleman Jim Rodda has raised his pirate flag, officially transforming the historical house on the corner of Pacific and Drew into a pirate ship.

And, that’s just one of the cool stops on the Halloween Magical Mystery Tour of Appleton’s Northside.

You’ll find pirate magic at the Painted Lady (402 East Pacific) any day or night of the week leading up to Halloween. There’s a four-chapter pirate story featuring Gentleman Jim and his motley band of scallywags, so intent on securing passage through Dead Man’s Cove they’re willing to sell their souls.

Every year the story grows and the display gets more impressive.

And that’s just one stop on the tour.

Just around the corner from the Painter Lady lies a haunted graveyard full of giant spectres. You can check out that cool display at 705 South Meade.

A few blocks north, you’ll find a decorated yard for a good cause. Skeletons for St. Jude raised funds for St. Judes Hospital and features a selfie bench and all kinds of ghoulish creatures. Check them out at 1007 East Marquette.

On your way from there to the famous Munn Haunted House ( 412 East Tallgrass), you can swing past another fun display at 417 East Frances.

From there, I suggest a drive south on Mason Street. I ran into this Halloween extravaganza by accident and, when I spotted the skeleton ferris wheel, I almost caused one too. Just kidding. But, I did pull over and park so I could take a closer look.

I loved the creativity and commitment. Even a truck parked in the driveway featured a lazy skeleton sprawled out on a bed of rocks after a hard day’s work. You can find this on at 1839 North Mason.

Every year I appreciate the generosity of people who spend so much time and energy transforming their yards into celebrations of whimsy and seasonal creepiness.

If you know of a house in the neighborhood that’s dressed up for seasonal visitors, let me know.

Until then, please take a spin around my neck of the woods and enjoy the Halloween magic.

Here’s the Painted Lady by day …
And here she is at night. There’s a magic clam shell, a four panel story, a mermaid’s lagoon and all sorts of piratey fun.
There’s even a water bowl for landlubbing pets.
A biting clam shell.
Apparently 5 chocolate doubloons is still the going rate for pirate recruits.
A pillory for those that have the nerve to show up without costumes.
Just a couple of blocks over, you’ll find this fearsome display.
A witch brews a fearsome concoction she’s polite enough to warn you away from.
And this poor bare-footed soul wanders the grounds.
Just a ways up the street and over a block or two, you’ll find the Skeletons for St. Jude, which raises money for a really good cause.
A sign invites you take take advantage of their selfie bench, so I did.
I loved this skeleton ferris wheel so much I stopped by to take a video for my granddaughter. The skeleton dog even has a slipper in his mouth.
I also got a big kick out of this skeleton taking a bubble bath. (And the one emerging from the outhouse guarded by that giant cat. I mean, the creativity here is just delightful!
A couple of rowdy skeletons cooking out. There’s also a skeleton on spit.
These two skeletons seem like they’re having fun. I didn’t even have time to read all of the witty tombstones.
I can’t tell if this guy came with the stones in the back of this truck or if he’s just relaxing after a hard day.
