I’d hoped for a good picture when I stopped at Packer training camp, and I got it.
Because Green Bay is the greatest franchise in the history of the NFL, I also got a great story.
Both involve a cute munchkin with a bike, a pom pom-stuffed basket, a Packer dress and a great name.
I met Crosby on a sunny Monday morning at Lambeau, and I asked if i could borrow her bike for a quick photo. I had a copy of our new book “Lambeau Ladies — the Boundary-Breaking Women Behind Lombardi’s Packers” in my hand. My co-writer, Katherine, and I thought it would be fun for our book to take a spin through one of the coolest traditions in all of sports — the Packer bike swap.
For as long as I’ve been alive, kids have lined up with their bikes during training camp, hoping a player will choose their bike to ride from the stadium to the practice field. Fans line the path on either side, cheering and holding signs. It feels more like a carnival than a practice.
The player hops on the bike, and the kid jogs alongside, and its about the most wholesome thing you’ll see. High fives all around.
I asked Crosby’s mom if I could borrow the bike for a quick picture. She spotted the book in my hand, and then she MADE MY DAY.
“Is that the book about the Packer wives,” she asked.
“It is,” I said.
“I’ve been wanting to get it,” she said. “I can’t wait to read it!”
I mean, readers, what would you do?
Crosby wanted to be in the picture too, and her mom said it was okay, so we set up our shot.
“Do we get to keep the book?” Crosby asked.
Her mother called over.
“No, we’re going to buy the book.”
I whispered to Crosby, “I’m going to give your mom the book. It’ll be a surprise.”
We took the picture, and it turned out to be as cute as I’d hoped.
Then I handed Crosby’s mom the book and headed back to my car.
I’m a pretty terrible businesswoman, but I am really good at spotting a good story. I felt like I had come out ahead on that deal.
And, I did. Because that story got even better.
When we posted the picture, Crosby’s mom Stacey, contacted me through Facebook to thank me, again, for the book. We got to chatting and it turns out Crosby and her family are even bigger Packer fans than I thought.
First of all, they are diehard Packer fans that, until three years ago, lived in Ohio.
How diehard, you ask?
Crosby is named after former Packer ace kicker Mason Crosby, their favorite player.
I asked if I could post the family’s profile picture, and Stacey said yes, and you’ll see what I mean about their allegiance to the Green and Gold.
I’m so tickled by these sweet stories and all the cool people we’re meeting as we roll out our book!
If you have a good Lambeau Lady story, let us know! We’re all ears over here and we love to share these heartwarming tales.
It’s going to be a great season!
