A Halloween for the ages

One of my favorite Halloween memories is of the time I took my two-year old son Charlie trick or treating and he thought every costumed person we saw was the real thing.

Imagine waking up from your afternoon nap and finding Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles walking up and down your very own street! And then getting to mingle with them as you collect a plastic pumpkin full of candy!

Such magic! Such joy! Such a Happy Halloween!

This year, Charlie and his wife Tara have been getting to experience exactly that kind of Halloween joy with their own two-year old, our little New Jersey bagel, Margo.

So magical for them were those days leading up to Halloween that they required three costumes. (Not really. Charlie just has always really loved Halloween. For a good chunk of his adulthood, he hosted Halfway to Halloween parties at which he wore elaborate costumes. This year, he turned all that Halloween enthusiasm to his little mini me.)

Margo opened the week with a spot-on Hannah Montana ensemble, she followed that with a more practical Spider-Gwen costume and, finally, our little Talking Heads fan dressed as David Byrne.

Of course, we loved them all. We especially loved the Jack O’Lantern grin she wore as she modeled each costume.

I love the way Halloween magic stretches across the miles and through the generations.

We could all use a little reciprocal joy these days.

Happy Halloween from Charlie, Margo and me, three generations of costume-loving, pumpkin-carving, candy-sharing goofballs who really enjoy the day.

We hope you do too.

Charlie’s first Halloween. I can’t say the pumpkin’s my best work, but that kid behind it is.
That’s Charlie in the green crayon costume. I love nursery school costume parades. I took this picture, which means I left my little toddler daughter Katherine unattended at that table in the back. The mother in the striped shirt seems on it, though. There’s a witch who would definitely rather be home and so many clowns and Ninja Turtles! Charlie appears to be hiding something up his sleeve. This whole scene cracks me up.
Fast forward 35 years and look at this adorable little Hannah Montanna! Costume No. 1 was a big hit.
Uncle Ed and Aunt Katherine got to join in on the Halloween fun. Here’s costume No. 2 Spider-Gwen.
Charlie, Tara, Spider-Gwen and the cleverest Halloween sweatshirt hinting at even more Halloween fun to come.
Spider-Gwen moves pretty fast.
It’s hard to pick a favorite costume but, based on sheer chutzpah, I do love this David Byrne ensemble.
I mean…
You can hardly tell them apart.
