I can’t say I’m a big fan of this whole end of Daylight Savings Time thing.
I like my sunsets to happen in the evening when I can enjoy them, not a few hours after lunch when I’m only midway through my to-do list.
But, I think Wisconsin needed that extra hour this year.
We’re exhausted over here — the happy kind of tired you get after things like your wedding, the birth of a child, an historic World Series title.
We’re bleary eyed from the run-up, during which diehard fans could hardly close their eyes for fear they’d discover this magical season was just a dream. The newbies caught the fever too and stayed up just as late learning all about strike zones and pitch counts so they could hold their own in the water cooler discussions the next day.
That post-season run drew crowds from every corner — from tiny taverns crammed full of neighbors and friends to sold out watch parties in stadiums.
Then, when Brice Turang fielded that grounder and tossed the ball to Jake Bauers to seal the title, we thought that was it — the end of the game, series and season.
Turns out we were just getting started. Our Brewers earned that trophy and they wanted to share it with anyone who’d ever shouted “Let’s Go Brewers!”
They didn’t just parade it through Milwaukee, they ran it through the crowds, high-fiving fans and posing for so many selfies their cheeks must have hurt from all that smiling.
It seemed like most of Wisconsin attended that parade and the celebration that followed. My sister Kathy and I did. So did my brothers in-law, Steve and Jimmy, my nephew Sam and my niece Erin.
The rest of the state watched it live on nearly every channel.
The universal joy that title brought to Wisconsin should light us up through any dark days ahead.
We might have rested Saturday, as was our due, but Halloween fell on an unseasonably warm weekend and no one in this state is going to pass that up.
So, we stocked up our candy buckets, flipped on our porch lights and partied some more.
The trick-or-treaters came by the hundreds to our neighborhood, wearing adorable costumes no one had to cover up with parkas and boots.
Such fun!
My sister Kathy and her husband Keith added three birthday parties and a Bucks game to their already packed schedule this weekend, and got to see Brewers’ Cooper Pratt and Jackson Chourio sitting court side there.
Brewer general manager Pat Murphy, captain Christian Yelich and Brice Turang also showed up on Saturday Night Live.
I love how generously the Brewers are sharing the joy of their season.
It’s been a blast!
Let’s go (take a nap), Brewers! Then, let’s rev up for more!
(On a side note — my mom and I will be hosting a book talk tonight at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. My daughter Katherine is joining us online — and we’d love to see you there. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and we’re speaking at 7:30.)
Whew! It’s been quite a whirlwind!
Let’s go!
