I remember exactly where I was the last time the Brewers won a baseball game that sent them to the World Series.
It happened in 1982 and I watched the game with a bunch of my friends in the common room at O’Donnell Hall on the west end of the Marquette Campus.
We screamed when Cecil Cooper hit a two-run single to put the Brewers ahead of the Angels, 4-3.
“Coooooooop!”
When Robin Yount threw Rod Carew out at first to end the game, we all streamed out the door and ran two blocks over, where we joined throngs of people celebrating wildly on Wisconsin Avenue.
I looked to my right saw my tiny friend Sue launched into the air and body passed down the street. We picked her up near Johnston Hall and continued our happy march east.
That night for Brewer was a little like what the Ice Bowl is to Packer fans. Everyone I know ended up on Wisconsin Avenue the night the Brewers won the pennant.
They didn’t win the World Series that year, but then Robin Yount rode his motorcycle around the bases at County Stadium and that was almost as good.
I’m so excited for Brewer fans and Wisconsinites in general that our team is back at it after 44 years. I’d love to be in Milwaukee tonight for the game.
We’ll be watching from home, though, cheering this upstart team that includes so many young athletes who have played for the Timber Rattlers right here in Appleton.
We also love cheering for Appleton’s own Matt Erickson, Brewer third base coach and all-around nice guy.
Let’s Go Brewers!
People are going to be telling the story of this team for the next 45 years.

Thank you Laura! I’ve been sharing my memories with anyone who will listen of that great night in Milwaukee in October 1982. I, too, did NOT do well on those midterms but glad to know I was in good company.

Why did they even give us Midterms that year? 🤣🤣
