Gentleman Jim is back with his merry band of scalawags and his fascinating display of ingenuity and fun.
Step lively and make yer way to the vessel located on the corner of Pacific Street and Drew for the latest chapter in Gentleman Jim’s chronicles.
I wrote about Gentleman Jim’s Painted Lady when I discovered him in 2023 and again last year.
Gentleman Jim used to design large scale video games for a living and he takes his craft-making seriously. So, his Halloween display, with its accompanying pirate tale, will really shiver yer timbers.
Each year he adds a chapter to the tale of the Painted Lady and its motley crew of treasure seekers.
When last we left them, even the bilge rats had cheered the schooner’s perilous journey to Dead Man’s Cove. The crew intended to steal a Kraken’s heart, and Gentleman Jim had sold his soul to a crafty sea hag to secure their passage.
You can read all four chapters from past years, and the fifth chapter, installed this year, when you visit the display. I particularly enjoyed this year’s cliff hanger, involving a very clever Madame LaRue.
How cool is the Painted Lady display? The crew fires T-shirts from a cannon to anyone who shows up on Halloween dressed as a pirate. A real-life sea hag emerges from her shell to hurl insults at any rapscallions brave enough to venture by. This year, the many-eyed Kraken sentinel also keeps watch, and, due to some innovative computer programming, all those eyes follow you as you pass.
Step to! It’s Halloween Week and you don’t want to miss all the fun.
Head on over to 402 East Pacific Street in Appleton to check out the display, read the story, and make yer plans for the big night.
All hands will be on deck on Halloween from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and you’ll be in for a great show. If you dress show up dressed like a pirate — no matter your age — you’ll get to catch a cannon-fired T-shirt.
Weigh anchor and away!
