Thank you. Thank you very much

This is my 1,924th post on this blog, and my last, at least for a while.

I am taking a sabbatical because I have some other writing that deserves my full attention. For that project, a partnership with my daughter Katherine, we have interviewed some very generous storytellers and we want to honor them as expediently and eloquently as we can.

So, I’m stepping away from this blog that I’ve hosted for 13 years and I do it with such genuine gratitude for all of you.

In all of those years and with each of those posts I have experienced nothing but kindness and support.

Even when you don’t agree with me, you offer your opinions without rancor. Would that the world could operate as kindly and wittily as the comment section of this blog.

You let me reminisce about my maternal glory days and a childhood I really enjoyed. Together, we cheered on the Packers, a Croatian soccer team, the Appleton North football team, my sister’s granddaughter Shakeela and all the other athletes we discovered along the way.

You all never said a negative word when Molly’s potato cookie recipe produced a decently delicious pastry hot out of the oven that became nearly inedible when it cooled. And, unchastened, that 13-year old chef developed into one of the finest and most creative bakers we know. Thank you for that early support.

I really loved writing about the world’s best little city and all the cool restaurants, bakeries, candy shops and businesses we have here.

Together we all fought to save the Erb Park pool and get the lights put back on the City Park tree. We didn’t change the world but we sure kept it fun.

Thank you for supporting my sister Kathy through her miraculous cancer journey and for receiving the other stories about my family and friends so cheerfully.

I know I have other stories I want to share and they’ll probably find their way into this space again.

For now, though, I just wanted to explain that I’m taking an extended break and that I am so very grateful to all of you for your friendship and support here.

I saw this sign on an Alabama beach and I think it reflects a little of what this blog has meant to me.
I had to scroll back through about a billion images to get to this first picture me taken during the one summer we thought we might turn our backyard into a bountiful garden. The blog evolved from there and I really appreciate all of you who joined me way back in August of 2011 and all along the way.
Thank you very much!

  16. awww…. You have been such a faithful writer unlike me, who has to “get in the mood” first. I will miss reading your columns — even though some of those are binged when I get behind.
