Happy Groundhog Day in a Lambeau Leap year

New Jersey Margo reports sunny days ahead.

It’s easy for her to predict an early spring because she’s been spreading sunshine since she was born, just after Groundhog Day one year ago.

That means our own little groundhog celebrates her first birthday tomorrow.

Of course, she sees blue skies, and happy times, and delicious cake ahead! So do we.

We hope you do too.

These are heady, freakishly warm days here in Wisconsin, a Lambeau Leap year that has brought us so much optimism and joy. While it’s true that New Jersey Margo napped through some quarters of those exciting Packer games, it is also true that she got to visit the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field, She even sported the colors of our beloved team, and the jersey of our even more beloved Hall of Famer, her great-grandpa Ron.

Even Margo knows there might be challenging weather ahead — snow squalls, ice storms, sleet and tummy aches that wake her in the middle of the night. But, she’s learned to define spring a little more broadly than some of her more famous, alliteratively named groundhogs.

Spring, for New Jersey Margo, is that first, squeaky bite into a fresh cheese curd. It’s a sweatshirt snuggle in that perfect nook between her mom’s neck and shoulder. It’s the way the world looks from her perch on her dad’s broad shoulders.

We can define spring broadly too — in the taste of a perfect strawberry; the cheerful stoicism of a brave friend; the deep, belly laugh of a great storyteller; a phone call from a chatty child; a long walk, a deep and cleansing breath.

We hope you find some spring today, however you define it.

Happy Groundhog Day, from New Jersey Margo and me.

New Jersey Margo is the cutest groundhog in all the land.
Many thanks to her mom and dad for humoring New Jersey Margo’s Wisconsin grandma on a spontaneous trip to Lambeau earlier this year,
Grandpa Toes and I wish her a very Happy birthday.
She’s a super hero groundhog and so loved by us all.
