My January gym

My January gym waits quietly, both patient and stern.

I walk past it multiple times in the course of my day and it is always open, a no-excuses oasis of possibility, a siren of sweat.

Most days, I can think of 100 reasons I don’t have time to work out. My January gym responds with 101 solutions.

I can’t say it’s a state of the art facility, but it has everything I need — some free weights, a glute band, a mat and some good ole ingenuity.

The whole operation takes place on the east end of my dining room. I just shove the table over a couple of inches to give myself some breathing room.

My virtual coach, Sydney Cummings Houdyshell, puts me through some stellar workouts. I often have in-house coaches too.

“You’re doing it right!” they’ll say as they wander past on their way to the family room to watch some TV.

Or, “You’re not doing what she is!”

Sometimes they’ll join me and we haul out a companion mat.

Mostly, though, I work out alone and I’m grateful to do it. Even when I bark back at Sydney because I really hate to do pushups and she’s just told me to do another 10, I always feel thankful to have carved out time in my day to work out.

I still like to go to the Y some days and to treat my achy body to soothing session of hot yoga on others.

But, when I want to be really consistent with my exercise and maximize the time I have, when my motivation is low because the snow is piling high, when my day is especially long and busy, I’m very happy to have my January gym.

How do you workout on cold winter days? I’d love to hear more ideas.

Look at all that good, healthy sweat on my poor mat!
My January gym looks a lot like a dining room.
But it has everything I need for good, sweaty workout.
And, when I’m done, I just flip the carpet back up. It’s like a little Murphy Bed gymnasium.

  1. I love this post! I especially like your little roll up carpet.😉

I really like my TRX class at the Y. The instructor is great and I’ve made some lasting friendships there and gained some strength as well. At home I have a space in our lower level that I use for yoga, stretching, dancing, and some strength work. I like the solitary aspect of that space. The quiet is nurturing.

    1. I used to love my Y boot camp class for those reasons too. Maybe I’ll try a TRX class. Great tips. Thank you!

  2. Laura, if you’re a morning person, there is a great TRX class at AppleCreek Y on Tues./Thurs. at 5:05 a.m. That’s the one I attend. I used to go once a week, but I like it so much I now go twice.
