My sister in-law Joan Biskupic sure knows how to time a book launch.

A senior Supreme Court Analyst for CNN, Joan has been covering the Supreme Court for most of her storied career. This is her fifth book about various justices and it is sure to be as well-written, interesting and thoroughly researched as the first four. Joan is an old school, award-winning journalist who relies on facts from documented sources to tell her story. As the 45 pages of footnotes that follow the story in Nine Black Robes attest, she can back up every word she writes.
And she writes them in such an engaging way that those of us who have never studied law can understand some of its intricacies.
She doesn’t just know the law, she also knows the justices who interpet it. Her books on Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, Sonia Sotomayor and John Roberts offer telling details about each of the justices — their habits, childhoods, mannerisms and visions of their legal legacies.
These past few years have been unprecedented for everyone, but almost especially for the U.S. Supreme Court, which dealt with a pandemic, contentious hearings and the appointment of four justices in six years.
I am really looking forward to reading Joan’s account of a pivotal period in the court and the country it represents.
With my I Voted sticker still fresh on my sweatshirt, I bought my copy of Nine Black Robes yesterday and I can not think of a better way to mark the end of the spring election season.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some reading to do…
