Two protests, both alike in dignity

I attended two protests this weekend in Appleton and, though the weather varied greatly between them, the spirit did not.

They were both alike in dignity, and in the reaffirming way they showed that the worst of times often bring out the best in people.

I witnessed a lot of goodness both at Saturday’s march through downtown and at the Palm Sunday Path, a rally jointly organized by area churches.

A cold wind blew through the streets on Saturday, and, still, a determined, multi-generational group of people showed up. I saw a woman push a wheelchair with one hand while holding a sign aloft with the other. I followed her and her “Love makes US great” sign through the whole route and thought about how well she lived the words she had so artfully displayed.

Love played a featured role in both events, as both a noun and a verb. So did its close relative, compassion.

What better way to celebrate Palm Sunday than to take a stand with and for your neighbor?

My mom joined me for the Sunday rally, and Mother Nature blessed us with a nice, warm day.

Again, the calls to action centered on human decency and kindness, just as the Bible tells us.

The whole weekend felt like a fresh breath of freedom and equality, and exactly the way we should be treating people in a country that was founded on the celebration of both.

This strong woman pushed a wheelchair through the whole route, while holding and living the words “Love makes US great.”
Love played a featured role in both rallies.
So did spunk.
Democracy both ensures and requires free speech.
Even the introverts rallied on Saturday.
A cold wind blew in on Saturday, but thousands of people marched anyway.
Character does matter.
Same.
A Pretti Good crowd for a Saturday.
My mom joined me for the Palm Sunday Path.
A simple requests, here, and an impressive effort to make it.
It ain’t.
Great messages for a Palm Sunday, or any day.

  1. Bill O”Reilly summed it up best…”Dissent without solutions is a foolish waste of time. It makes the protestor look dumb. You want to vent against Trump? Bring some positive positions.” In these protests, there was no emphasis on specific positive solutions.

    1. The protests I attended were all about positivity. I think we’re all pretty clear on what the solution is.

  2. I think Congress – both parties — should be ashamed of themselves for leaving on recess without any resolution. They should not be paid during their hiatus when such crucial matters going on. When I was with the airlines in management, we provided 24/7 support to our internal customers (the flight attendant) no matter what. They should do the same. People going without paychecks and being used as pawns while Congress plays games with no compromise is inexcusable.
