The Wizards of Our Neighborhood

The Magic Hallmark House has outdone itself this Halloween season, and that’s not easy to do.

Brian Kemp and his husband Mark Romanowski-Kemp put together an astonishing display that celebrates Home! Hollywood! and Halloween! With painstaking detail, they turned their corner into an MGM lot with their ode to the Wizard of Oz.

“Mark came up with the idea and spent months getting the costumes and details,” Brian said. “We built all of the characters, each taking two hours or so.”

In the movie, Dorothy says, “If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard.”

Brian and Mark demonstrate this theme with their lush, technicolor display.

A giant, pumpkin-headed Dorothy wearing ruby slippers and carrying Toto in a basket stands at one end of a yellow brick road. The Wicked Witch of the West guards the front door and looks exactly like Margaret Hamilton with a green pumpkin head, her long, narrow fingers stretched out in an “I’ll get you, my pretty!” gesture.

A flying monkeys patrols the roof and a big old Winkie Guard stands sentry.

Naturally, the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow also play featured roles.

I live close enough that I can stroll past nearly any time of the day, and I plan to between now and Halloween. To date, I have seen it on a clear evening, cloudy afternoon and sunny morning. Each time, I have noticed new details and I can’t wait to walk past again.

You can treat yourself to all the magic at 2020 Drew Street in Appleton.

What a gift to have such creative neighbors so willing to share their talent with us all.

Happy Halloween!

By day, our girl Dorothy looks like her sweet self, with her little dog too!
By night she’s a little more ominous.
There’s a yellow brick road too.
And it lights up at night.
A giant flying monkey…
…looks magnificently terrifying at night.
And that cowardly lion?
Looks more scary than scared at night.
I’ll get you my pretty.
In technicolor at night.
How cool is this Winkie Guard?
The tin man and his pile of wood.
The scarecrow.
All in all, an astonishing display.
