A souper tasty Christmas gift

I’d been saving my daughter Molly’s Christmas gift for a special occasion.

As it turns out, that special occasion was an ordinary Tuesday in the middle of January.

For the past few years, Molly has made me treats for Christmas. One year, she gave me homemade quarts of ice cream. Last year, she made me tamales.

This year, she made soup dumplings, a delicacy I first tasted on a visit to New York and have been craving ever since.

The dumplings she made and then flash froze looked beautiful. I thought about pulling them out for New Year’s Eve, but that night turned out to be hectic and I wanted to savor my dumplings.

I pulled them out Tuesday because it had already been a rough week (48 hours in) and I thought we could use a little pick-me-up. I don’t have a steamer basket, so Molly sent me instructions to use a regular pot with an elevated plate and a kitchen towel.

That worked perfectly.

I’m happy to say my whole household enjoyed the dumplings (and wasn’t it generous of me to share?)

I’ve learned that Chinese dumplings, in addition to being tasty and fun to eat, symbolize wealth and prosperity. I can confirm, as I slurped mine up on a random week night in the dull wake of the holidays, that I felt like a queen.

Thanks very much to Molly for another souper tasty Christmas present.

I don’t have any pictures of Molly making the soup dumplings because she snuck them into the house and hid them until Christmas. But, here’s a festive picture of Chef Molly with her Grandma Peggy and me.
Here’s the plate-on-a-bowl-in-a-pot set up where I steamed Molly’s dumplings.
You tie the dishcloth to the cover to keep the steam from dripping on the dumplings.
They were so good!!! (And I have a few more stashed away to enjoy on another random day).
