Green season

My favorite seasons are green.

There’s Packer season, of course, (Go Pack Go!), Christmas and, now, asparagus.

Joyful seasons all.

I like asparagus season because it opens the door to summer and you know strawberry season is coming up the walk.

I also appreciate its lack of fanfare. If you aren’t actually growing the stuff, you only know asparagus season has arrived when hand-lettered signs appear on the roadside inviting you to help yourself.

Despite those humble beginnings, asparagus can really class up a dinner plate.

Conversely, there’s an impish quality to asparagusic acid and the immediate smell it leaves behind. That’s some impressive marketing.

It’s really a very clever little stalk.

Apparently, asparagus will boost your mood too, because it’s full of folate and B12.

I can never tell if it’s the asparagus that’s making me smile, or the generous people who grow it, or the sunny season from which it springs.

I just know I love it.

So, here’s to asparagus and the people who grow it!

Get yours now because, like all the best seasons, it doesn’t last long.

I scored a couple of asparagus bouquets for Mother’s Day.
Fresh out of the field and a good deal too!
Wisconsin asparagus growers run on the honor system.
I stocked up! Just kidding. I only bought two bags. This is the asparagus cooler at Bergsbaken Farms. I’ll definitely be back for more.
Asparagus really classes up a dinner plate, don’t you think. This batch it grilled.
But I like it sautéed too.
