Did you ever have houseguests who were so charming you didn’t mind that they popped back to visit every time you put fresh sheets on the guest room bed?
A friend who made every day a party and convinced you to play hooky so easily you hardly recognized yourself?
Well, that’s how I feel about the 2024 version of summer in Wisconsin.
Just when I think I waved a sad goodbye, she pops back up for another round.
And I’m here for it.
Yesterday, we hit 80 degrees in our neck of the woods, so naturally we headed up to our cabin. As the late afternoon sun beckoned, I tried mightily to convince my husband we should take one last float down the river.
That would have made our fourth “last float of the summer” in 2024. That’s how amazing this summer has been.
A river float in Wisconsin on Oct. 29? Come on! How epic would that have been?
But my partner in this particular adventure said no way. He reminded me of the time I convinced him and our daughter Molly to take an October float several years ago and none of us could feel our extremities by the time we reached the dock.
I did promise after we hauled ourselves out of that situation that I would not ask them to float in October again.
But summer in Wisconsin 2024 writes its own rules. I rolled up my pants legs and waded into the river.
“It’s not cold at all!” I yelled to the shore, though I had to enunciate carefully because I could not catch my breath.
The air whispered July, while that stubborn river screamed Fall!
I waded back out, head held high and feet bleeding from some sort of injury I would not feel for hours.
Summer in Wisconsin, I love you. I’ll host you anytime.
And, if you come back in November, I’m heading right back to that river to say hello.

Who knew Summer 2024 would arrive with all its earnest sunshine and stamina?
