My friend Jill gave me a great idea.
She’s full of great ideas, honestly, and I’m a greedy taker of them.
In this case, she mentioned how much fun she’d had dressing in costume to play with her three-year old grandson.
I love a good costume project and the Halloween season seems like an especially magical time to surprise my little bagels with them.
I was all in.
My three-year old granddaughter loves Frozen. (My three-year old granddaughter also breathes and that feels like as newsworthy a sentence as the former. But I digress)
Margo regularly dresses like Anna or Elsa and flits about the house singing. I think she is equally enthralled with both characters.
So, I whipped myself up an Olaf costume and prepared to make some charming memories. My travel companion, who is also the girls’ grandpa, wondered if I’d have any trouble getting the costume through TSA.
“We’ll be fine!” I said as I stuffed it into my bag, though the pipe cleaner hair did give me pause.
We made it through without incident and Olaf and I enjoyed both legs of our trip to New Jersey. (Dear Allegiant please bring back the direct ATW to EWR route! But I digress)
I waited until the second day of our visit to haul out the surprise.
At the appointed hour, I snuck into a bedroom and costumed up. LaLa disappeared, and out walked Olaf.
Surprise!
I can not describe the look of horror on my two little bagels’ faces.
Eight-month old Ronni screamed in terror. I pulled down my hood to reassure her. She remained unconvinced.
Margo looked mildly embarrassed for me.
We did not spend hours frolicking through pretend snow. I retired the costume immediately.
Then we let it go and had a wonderful visit doing lots of other things.
You win some, you lose some in this grandma game. I added the Olaf costume to the outdoor Halloween display at our house and it makes me laugh every time I see it.
Here I stand in the light of day.
The scold never bothered me anyway.
