The Parachute Show is coming to Appleton and I could not be more excited.
A brainchild of Appleton native Hillary Reynolds and fellow LA-based, Wisconsin-born musician Madison Malone, the Parachute Show is an enchanted evening of light, laughter, love and, above all, talent. Pure & Weary host the show, which includes musicians, songwriters, poets and comedians.
“When I first moved to LA, I felt overwhelmed by only really building community through industry events — it all felt very ‘Hollywood’ and this flannel, barefoot lady is not that,” Hillary said. “So, I brainstormed the idea with a fellow Sconnie soul, Madison Malone, and BAM!, before I knew it, a 10-foot rainbow parachute was at my doorstep.”
The Parachute Show launched in LA back in 2018 and I have been wanting to attend one ever since. Well, Mama has not yet gotten to the that magical mountain of music and mirth and now, the mountain is coming to Mama. Halleluja!
You, too, can see the Parachute Show on Saturday, August 24 at 7 p.m. at Gibson Music Hall. I really hope you’ll join me because it’s going to be a very cool night.
“Parachute started as an LA passion project and quickly blossomed into its own community — the kind I had hoped to be a part of in LA.,” Hillary said. “Under the rainbow, we’ve featured comedy, music, poetry and occasional burlesque as well as tribute shows to Carole King, the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac.”
Katherine and Hillary will both be performing at the Appleton Parachute, along with Michael Murphy, Walt Hamburger and other local acts, (including the musical duo of Vinnie and Danni, and Molly, who will be doing a reading). Leah can’t make it due to a prior commitment she made to play a Civil War reenactor in a comedy burlesque show back in LA.
“The night will consist of many performances and mini sets featuring music, poetry, story telling and comedy,” Hillary said.
I love the idea of the parachute shows. Artists fling themselves into the air every time they step on a stage, publish a poem, release an album, perform a set. How amazing to leap into the world with a parachute there to provide an updraft and guide you safely to exactly where you’re supposed to land.
Of all the things I’m proud of Katherine and her friend Hillary for — headlining sold-out sketchfests, writing Grammy-nominated songs — I’m proudest of the community the two of them have built in LA and the support they both so regularly offer each other and their colleagues in an industry that doesn’t always encourage generosity.
Come to Gibson Hall on Saturday, August 24th (Molly’s birthday!) and treat yourself to a wonderful show.
I think you’ll leave feeling better about this old world and the talented people who inhabit it.
