At some point among the booms and pops, the sparklers and sunshine, surges the gratitude.
It swells like music from a bandshell and rises above the discord.
We are lucky to live during this miraculous time, on this big, beautiful planet and in this world that grows more intimate each day.
We, who live in America, enjoy the particular good fortune of freedom. We can challenge ideas, debate politics, learn new concepts, educate ourselves and our children, practice the religion we choose and raise our families, no matter how widely we define them, freely.
In honor of her birthday, may we continue to defend American freedom and to honor the challenge that freedom brings.
