By no means, King of the Road

When it comes to old car appreciation, I’m really more Holden Caulfield than Jay Leno.

Give me a smooth ride, a couple of working headlights, and I’m good to go.

Currently, I drive a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle and I’m pretty sure I’ll never love another car more.

So, when I figuratively, and then literally, stumbled unto two car shows this past weekend, I pulled out my camera instead of my wallet.

Still, I had a great time.

Friday, I took myself to Appleton’s License to Cruise, on the way home from dinner with my mom and sister. Curious about all the fuss and barricades, I parked, eased into the pleasant mass of people and got busy taking pictures. So intent was I on getting a clear shot of a yellow car, that I didn’t even notice a sweet woman holding back the foot traffic just for me and my trusty camera.

I’m telling you, these people were kind!

On Saturday, during a weekend with college friends, we stumbled into the Green Lake Car Show as we walked from our parking spot to the American Legion Pancake and Porkie breakfast.

I could have spent all day taking pictures of those cars and that Harvest Festival, but we had a busy schedule to keep and super fluffy pancakes to eat.

I still don’t really know a piston from a carburetor, but I did enjoy “photo shopping” my way through the car shows.

Here’s what I brought home:

Old Cars 18 again
The “18 Again” license plate caught my eye. As I said, I’m more of a Holden Caulfield car person. He said, (You should pardon the language) ““I don’t even like old cars. I mean, they don’t even interest me at all. I’d rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human.”
Old Cars 51 blue
I did love these car shows though
Old Cars admirer
I loved the shiny history, and seeing people who know their way around a socket wrench admire them.
Old cars American Gothic
I asked this gentleman if I could take his picture and he happily obliged. Then we ended up with this American Gothic portrait of a man and his car. I loved it.
Old Cars hearse
It’s a hearse and I thought it looked cool in the morning sun.
Old cars car-ception
Look closely for the mini car on the engine. I thought this sleek display of a car within a car was cool in a car-ception kind of way.
Old cars crowds
It’s a great car, but I took this shot to show how many people wedge themselves into the lanes at Appleton’s License to Cruise.
Old cars hippie van
This couple added a hippie musical element to their 1960’s Volkswagen van display.
Old cars know when to say when
It’s a family friendly event.
Old Cars Mercedes
The sun glinted off this gorgeous Mercedes perfectly.
Old Cars root beer floats
Old cars and root beer floats, a perfect slice of Americana.
Old Cras super beetle
You know I had to include a picture of the Super Beetle!
