A river runs through it

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.

That’s what we believe, anyway, in our little corner of Northeast Wisconsin. There’s not a better way to idle away a bright summer day.

With nothing more than an old inner tube, a thorough application of sun block and a couple of free hours, you can solve all the world’s problems on an aimless float toward the bay.

Rivers mirror life, generate it, support it, and become one of its greatest metaphors.

Constant as a day, and fleeting as a moment.

Look there! An eagle. Bald, proud, free and quickly gone.

Hear a splash and react quickly. Trout jumping? Beaver rushing? Goose landing?

Turn away for a moment and you miss your one chance to see the show.

And therein lies the conundrum.

Proper river floating requires basking, eyes closed, limbs resting loosely in the soft current, ears open to the forest’s song.

Rest with the current a while.

Understand, though, that the best river floats also celebrate challenge.

Dare yourself. Face upstream and feel the current push against you.

This is the dance.

This is life.

Run river run.

Oh beautiful
If you’ve been thinking you’re all that you’ve got.
Above the fruited plain
Then don’t feel alone anymore.
'Cause when we're together then we've got a lot
‘Cause when we’re together then we’ve got a lot
From sea to shining sea
I am the river and you are the shore.

Maybe you can’t get to a river today, but you can enjoy this Loggins and Messina song I hear every time I dip my toe in the river water. Happy Monday!
