If You Give a Lost Boy a Cookie (a post by Molly)

J.M. Barrie writes that a Lost Boy’s diet is mostly composed of tappa rolls, mami apples, and popo (whatever that is), and of course imaginary food. I’m sure Barrie didn’t account for the infinite appetites of the Lost Boys I know when he wrote this line.

If you give a Lost Boy a cookie, he’ll want a story to go with it. You’ll settle them down, and tuck them in, but they’ll try to interrupt you. They’ll want it to have white rats, or make sure that there’s a lady, and when you finish with your story, they’ll forget what it’s about. You’ll tell them you must go home, now that their story has been told. Sure enough, they’ll beg you to stay, with crying and sniffles. You’ll have to take them with you, and adopt them as your brothers. They’ll fight their way through pirates, and fly across the sea. They’ll protect you as their mother. You have to take them home. Of course your parents will adopt them, and send them off to school. And though they’ll never fly again, they’ll always be with you. If you give a Lost Boy a cookie, you’ll never be able to shake him. You’ll get a brother, protector, and most of all a friend.

Lost Boy’s Molasses Cookie

¾ cup butter

1 cup brown sugar

¼ cup molasses

1 egg

2 cups flour

2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. cloves

1 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. cardamom

1. Soften butter in microwave, and cream it with sugar molasses and egg.

2. Sift together dry ingredients, evenly mixing the spices.

3. Slowly, little by little, add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix until a thick dough has formed.

4. Either roll out dough into a thin sheet, and use your favorite cookie cutter to cut it (I use a mustache cookie cutter), or press small balls of dough evenly on a cookie sheet. Space each cookie about an inch and a half apart.

5. Bake at 375o for 8-10 minutes. Once cooled, stored cookies with a piece a bread in an air tight container.

Put everything except the pecans in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once you get a nice rolling boil, add the pecans. Stir continuously until all the water boils out. Pour the nuts unto a parchment covered cookie sheet. Let cool for 1/2 hour.
