Pleasantly pinned by a polka parade

A parade we had not expected trapped us on opposite sides of a street Sunday afternoon but, with the summer air filled with both polka music and the enticing smell of grilled polish sausage, neither of us minded.

We parked our cars on our respective sides of Pulaski Street and settled in to enjoy the show, because when you stumble into a big ole slice of Americana like the Pulaski Polka Days Parade, you really have to pause and enjoy.

Delighted with the spectacle, I made my way west toward Vince, who had stationed himself on the steps of Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Church, the largest rural Catholic Church in the United States.

Between us marched bands, dignitaries, dancers, and, most popularly, the Pulaski High School 2013 state champion basketball team sporting their team slogan “Yup!” on T-Shirts and a cleverly decorated float.

We saw huge farm implements, fire trucks, giant cheeseburgers, and float after float of cheerful polka bands.

I darted between a polka band and a candy tossing Boy Scout troop and made it safely across the street to join Vince on the church steps.

The parade, which lasted well over 90 minutes, was a mere prelude to the afternoon’s activities, which included dancing, food and general merriment.

We helped ourselves to holubki and a pierogi or two, then we hopped on the furthest dance floor on the grounds for a little discreet polka-ing. Just like last year, we wrapped up our trip to Pulaski Polka Days with a stop at Smurawa’s Bakery for some take home treats.

Will we be returning to Pulaski after this logistical hiccup that left us pleasantly pinned by a parade? Yup!

I love this picture of this little girl and her Polish grandpa because she's adorable and he reminds me of my Polish grandpa.

Hats off to the talented Pulaski high school marching band, which stretched for more than a block.

This team won Pulaski its first ever state basketball title. The crowd chanted their slogan "Yup!" I theorize it stands for "You underestimated Pulaski" but I can't confirm. I loved this energetic float.

I loved this energetic float. Look closely, the little girl in pink just optimistically took a shot at the distant hoop.
The Pulaski state champion float was designed for crowd partici[ation but, for the little guys who couldn't sink the three, these fellows offered a larger basket and a smaller ball for better odds. How kind!

  1. Alright, I see how it is, you leave out all the other bands of which “didn’t sound great” according to you. I seem to remember there being a PMS band AND a Seymour High School Band as I kinda marched the parade. Now, in Seymour we feel left out all of the time mainly because Pulaski gets all of the fame even in our own city. Their band just shows up and literally shows us up. Our own city barely knows where our last band trip was to as that just so happened to be, ummmm, Walt Disney World. A large portion of our own city hates us because we aren’t as good as Pulaski. And just one more thing to note, it is very inappropriate to give all the fame to the people who to be honest are given everything and don’t have to work much. If you were a truly good person, you would give credit to the SHS Band for sticking themselves out into a city like Pulaski, not that it is actually any better than any other city in the area.
