Happy birthday to the queen of the court (and our family)

On the day before her 87th birthday, my mom took a tennis lesson.

She likes to keep her game sharp.

It bothers her that she can’t hit the ball as hard as she did back when she used to run my dad around the court with her strategic baseline, baseline, drop shot, lob, drop shot game.

Sometimes she worries that her play isn’t up to par when she finds herself paired up with people less than half her age.

“I’m sure they don’t want to play with an old lady,” she says.

I tell her anyone would. Her presence on that court is proof to everyone that tennis truly is a life sport. I bet they all have #peggygoals when they watch her dash around.

I know I do.

So, on the occasion of her big day, please join me in wishing Grandma Peggy a Happy 87th Birthday!

She’s going to be a little miffed that I put her actual age in here again but I have strong feelings about that too.

I think we need to start thinking of age as more of an accomplishment and less of a curse. And we should celebrate our oldest family members like the queens they are.

So, here’s to my mom on the first day of her newest year. I hope it’s the best one yet.

And, if you want to age like my mom, here are a few tips:

You’ll want to rise early and start your day with a crossword puzzle and a strong cup of coffee.

You have to keep moving. My mom likes to workout twice a day — a long walk, a tennis game, some light weights, or an afternoon swim. You can choose your game but you have to get out there. Twice.

When it sets before dinner, you should toast the sun with a nice glass of Chardonnay. When it sets a little later you can raise your glass to other beautiful things. The important thing is to start your evening meal with a celebratory drink.

You should end your day with a cookie or two and a glass of milk.

If you see something that isn’t right, do something about it. My mom is in regular contact with her elected officials.

Read books. It keeps your mind young and your worldview broad.

Keep in regular touch with your friends and family.

She has a busy day planned with my sister Kathy, who is visiting her in Florida.

I’ll bet there’s a chocolate cake on the agenda too.

My mom took a spontaneous dolphin tour with my sister Jenny last week.
Naturally they toasted the sunset.
So did we when I visited earlier this year.
My sister Kathy is there now. (She cheated with the photo though. This is the two of them in Paris. Oui Oui).
Kathy did snap this classic shot of my mom taking a tennis lesson yesterday. Grandma Peggy likes to keep her game sharp.
I love this picture of her and her oldest grandson Charlie and her first great-granddaughter Margo when they visited Wisconsin this summer.
She got to celebrate Christmas with all the rest of her grandchildren this year. Here she is with Katherine.
