The lilt of Irish laughter

I live in a magical city. So, at the end of this long week, I’m going to be dancing a jig.

I hope you’ll join me.

One of my favorite convergences of community and good ole Gaelic fun takes place this weekend at Jones Park.

The fifth annual Irish Fest begins Friday and runs through Saturday night. It’s going to be a grand time.

All of the great Irish bands are returning. You can see Skerryvore, Derek Byrne and Paddygrass, Boxing Banjo, Cassie and Maggie, and the Drowsy Lads.

Of course there will be Irish dancers as well, and plenty for the wee ones — including a children’s area that will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The first 100 kids will get an Irish tin whistle.

The food is always delicious as well, with Irish Stew, Shepherds Pie, Fish and Chips, corned beef and cabbage.

A cool addition this year is the ability to personalize your pint. You can send a picture from your phone and it will be printed in the foam of your Guinness. I’m might order myself a pint just to check it out.

Another thing I definitely want to check out is the Blazing a Trail Exhibition that tells the stories of famous Irish women. All of that will be in the Exhibition Center.

The people who organize Irish Fest, many of whom I count as my very good friends, have thought of everything. You can while away the hours sipping whiskey and listening the music, and then cleanse your soul with an amble over to St. Mary’s Parish for their Celtic Mass.

I’ll see you there!

I love watching Skerryvore perform. It’s a high-energy, toe-tapping festival of joy every time they take the stage.
I don’t have any pictures of this year’s festival yet, obviously, but here are a few of my favorites from past Irish Fests, featuring the heart and soul of the festival — the organizers. This is my friend Amanda Hudson and she’s a dynamo. You’ll see her everywhere this weekend, smiling broadly even though she’s cooked almost all of the food you see.
And here’s the festival chairman, our friend Mark Hudson. These are amazing people doing amazing things for the community.
And, speaking of amazing people doing amazing things for the community, you’ll see our friend Tim Higgins all over the Festival too. He’s a gem.
And, speaking of Higgins’, here’s our favorite leprechaun Marge, along with Chris Higgins at Irish Fest last year. I know her Irish eyes are smiling down at all the fun this year.

  1. Mrs. Higgins was the coolest mom at St. Mary’s.

There were a lot of Irish families at the school but Mrs. Higgins was the only one who dyed the hair of her blonde children green every St. Patrick’s Day!
