Christmas in Santa Fe

Of course Christmas twinkles from every corner of Santa Fe, the city shares the big guy’s name.

The fey spirit of Santa winks out from everywhere — obvious places like the well-lit town square and quieter corners of the foothills.

Pepper garlands loop through street lights and store windows. A street crooner braves the chilly night air, strumming his guitar and working his way through a nightly setlist of Christmas Carols.

A thousand colored lights stretch across Santa Fe Plaza, which feels like a Hallmark Movie set as you wander through.

A Santa hat perches cheerfully on a longhorn above fireplace.

The spirit of the season greets peace seekers at a Japanese spa, it beckons the faithful to a stately cathedral.

Christmas even bubbled up from the Santa Fe River, where ice chunks float merrily along.

I worried our business trip to Santa Fe during this busy time in December would take us away from the sometimes frantic work of preparing for the Christmas season.

Instead, I found inspiration everywhere I looked.

We’re heading back to Wisconsin tomorrow, grateful to New Mexico for its friendly people, tasty food, ubiquitous art, natural beauty and Christmas spirit.

So we got to walk through it every night.
I have to think this is the Grinch AFTER his heart grew three sizes …
…because I saw him everywhere.
Lantern lights above the adobe buildings looked elegant next to the colored twinkle lights and tiny Christmas trees.
A call for peace from a Japanese garden.
A Santa hat on a longhorn mantle.
I poked my head into a courtyard and could not believe this beautiful display.
The sun happened to hit this religious icon painted on a tree stump just as I walked past. It seemed appropriate to stop and say a little prayer — a quieter moment of Christmas beauty.
In the midst of my Christmas photo safari, I got eaten by a bear. (This picture was really just for my granddaughter Margo but I thought it was pretty funny). Art is everywhere in Santa Fe, which makes every stroll a delight.
