Magic in the Wisconsin sky

I love when Wisconsin skies become an event.

A sunrise stretches slowly over the dark sky and everyone pauses their busy morning to applaud.

A golden sunset fades to purple as it bows to its reflection in a calm summer lake.

An eclipse dares us all to risk irreversible blindness just to take a peak.

And that brilliant, sneaky aurora borealis lights up the sky with such magnificence we all forgive the times we chased her and she slipped away.

My friend Hsing-Yi texted me on May 10 as I scrolled through the weather app on my phone. We both follow the Facebook page Northern Lights of Wisconsin, so we knew the numbers were looking good for a Northern Lights appearance.

Excited by the numbers, we tossed around a few hilarious schemes to chase the lights. Eventually, we decided to take our chances at our cabin. We invited some other friends so it became the kind of gathering that would be really fun regardless of whether Lady A joined us.

Ah, but she did! Faintly visible to the naked eye, she really danced for our camera lenses. We snapped away in absolutely giddy delight.

My husband Vince and I got to see her again in August when we stopped by our cabin to lock it up, decided to take a quick float down the river and then lingered long enough to spend the night.

I could not believe our luck when I stepped outside that evening. I have never seen such a gorgeous, celestial show. He snapped as many pictures as I did and we both wondered at our luck.

The lights were out again this past Sunday and Monday night, and I chased them a little. It’s kind of scary to chase them away from the cabin though. You pull over on an isolated road and turn your car lights off and just stand there hoping you don’t get hit or abducted by aliens or otherwise.

I headed home, satisfied with a shot I’d taken earlier that evening of the moon rising and the sun going down. I love that sky dance too.

I’d love to see your pictures of the cool Wisconsin skies.

Here are mine:

Our trip to the cabin in May with our friends resulted in some cool pastel skies.
My friend Hsing-Yi and I came up with some hilarious schemes to see them but we settled on a night at our cabin. It was fun to see the lights with our friends.
They got a little more intense as we stood there, just giddy with delight.
I loved the walls of purple and green.
And the way that sky looked wrapped around this old silo.
And then, in August, we saw them again!
I could not believe how gorgeous those colors looked. This time we could see them both with our cameras and the naked eye.
The Northern Lights and the Big Dipper.
The colors and the stars were just brilliant.
Here’s a view of the lights from the river behind our cabin.
I didn’t get to see them Sunday or Monday when the Northern Lights were out, but I did get to see the moon high-fiving the sun and that was a pretty cool show too.
