Two hours after I posted my Monday blog, I received an email from my former piano teacher.
A passionate activist, she was not pleased that I had written about Wisconsin weather without mentioning the fact that we all should be doing more to protect our climate.
Two hours after I received her email, I purchased a water infuser.
I can’t say my former piano teacher and I always agree, but I like to think we learn from each other and I think, in this case, she has a point.
I think we can all be a little kinder to our environment. I know I can. For instance, last year I discovered Hint water, unsweetened water infused with fruit, and I really loved it. I do not drink enough water, and those Hint flavors encouraged me to drink more.
But, Hint water only comes in single serving bottles and those bottles add up. I grew increasingly uncomfortable with the amount of plastic bottles that ended up in my recycling bin, especially after I learned from a young man who used to work in a recycling center that a significant amount of items in those bins can not be recycled.
So, I bought the infuser and I’m looking forward to making my own fruity water. As a side benefit, I’m going to save money too.
I am not a big consumer because I don’t like to shop. I’m also lucky to live close enough to my work that I can walk there most days. For me, those two aspects of helping protect the environment come pretty easily.
Other areas I find more challenging. But, I’m going to try to do better. This old world could use some love.
A Native American tenet encourages people to teach, learn from, and protect the three generations that have come before them, and the next three generations after.
If we consider our impact on those generations, I think we can all reap the benefits of a healthier planet.
