Ere I forget all the joys that are mine today

I thought I had a church song rumbling around my head during these past few lovely days of summer.

Turns out it was John Denver.

In any case, it’s the perfect theme song for those of us who might be getting a little worried that our favorite season is zooming along too fast.

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine

I’ll taste your strawberries. I’ll drink your sweet wine.

A million tomorrows shall all pass away

Ere I forget all the joys that are mine today.

It seems like a perfect day to remember all the joys that are mine — and yours — today.

Let’s start with that old, reliable sun that woke us up this morning and said, “It’s Friday! Let’s go!”

And a summer breeze, finally clear of smoke, that rustles those gorgeous, green leaves and says, “Breathe. You’re here. You’re fine and the weekend ahead is full of possibilities.

And the tastes! The sweet strawberries, burgers hot off the grill, tomatoes fresh from the vine and the ice cream. Here’s to the ice cream!

And the toes! Those wiggly toes unstifled by socks or shoes, and ready to dip into the water, sand and soft, green grass.

And the sounds! The boing of the diving board, splash of the water and, best of all, the laughter that bubbles up from playgrounds and parks all over the city.

And the smiling faces! Released from their winter cocoon of wool scarves and bulky hoods, human faces strolling past with warm greetings.

And the flowers! Annuals! Perennials! And the wild ones that pop up unexpectedly on river banks and between sidewalk cracks.

And the parades! And the Farmers Markets! And the patios with their Edison Lights and promise of lingering dinners! And the music!

I can’t be contented with yesterday’s glory

I can’t live on promises winter to spring

Today is my moment and now is my story

I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing.

I hope today is a beautiful one for all of you.

Let’s jump into the weekend like we’re Captain America!
Taste the strawberries!
Enjoy the quiet moments. I got to ride my bike to yoga in the park this week and it was blissful.
Here’s to all the flowers but especially the wild ones that pop up in unexpected places.
I hope you get to spend some time this weekend on or near the water. PC Danni Askew
Or around a campfire.
Or listening to some great music.

  1. That song is one of my faves, but for me it was The New Christy Minstrels who first sang it. The album is a soundtrack for a film Advance to the Rear, about the Civil War. What surprises me is a don’t remember John Denver recording this. Looked it up and right you are. It really is such a beautiful song.
