Hey there, Delilah

Around here, they called this week’s winter storm Delilah, which meant two things:

  1. If they name them alphabetically, that means we’ve only had four winter storms this year.
  2. No one could get that catchy tune by the Plain White Tees out of their heads.

So, in the if-you-can’t-beat-them-join-them spirit of earworm songs, here’s my little tribute to a storm that came with plenty of hype and a respectable amount of bite:

Hey there Delilah I rewrote your little ditty

There’s a thousand streets and roads

That for a while weren’t lookin’ pretty

‘Cause of you.

And all that icy snow you blew

When you rolled through.

Hey there Delilah

Don’t you worry ‘bout that snow day

All our teachers and their students

Didn’t have to wear their jammies inside out

I heard them shout

They yelled hooray. You made their day.

Oh, it’s what you did to Milwaukee

Oh, it’s what you did to Milwaukee

Oh, it’s what you did to Milwaukee

Oh, it’s what you did to Milwaukee

What you do to me

Hey there, Delilah

I know that ice is gettin’ hard

But just believe me, girl

Someday the grass will find my yard

And we’ll be good

We’ll have the spring we knew we would

At least we should.

Hey there, Delilah

I’ve got so much left to shovel

And we Cheeseheads aren’t the type

To simply sit around and grovel

We say “Hey!”

We’ll work our keisters off today

And all that snow will go away

Oh, it’s what you did to Pulaski

Oh, it’s what you did to Pulaski

Oh, it’s what you did to Pulaski

Oh, it’s what you did to Pulaski

A thousand shovelers cursed your name

But they like winter just the same

And whining about snow is kind of lame.

Our southern friends will never know

The joy of blowing all this snow

When there isn’t anywhere for it to go.

Delilah, I can promise you

That by the time we get through

My back will never ever be the same

And you’re to blame.

Hey there, Delilah

You were good and kind of risky

Two whole days and quite a February show

With so much snow. You moved so slow.

But really we should salute you so

Hey there, Delilah, here’s to you

This ones for you

Oh, it’s what you do to Menomonee

Oh, it’s what you do Menomonee

Oh, it’s what you do to Menomonee

Oh, it’s what you do to Menomonee

What you do to me

Oh, whoa, whoa

Oh whoa, oh

Oh, oh, oh, oh

I didn’t really mind Delilah after all, and I even thought the view out of my window at work was kind of cool.
Hey there, Delilah!
A thousand streets and roads that for a while weren’t looking pretty.
In other ways, though, Delilah was kind of pretty.
And we had the whole sled hill to ourselves Wednesday night.
