An excellent Thursday night football game

I don’t know about you, but we saw an excellent football game last night.

It all came down to a quarterback sneak off an excellent block by the left tackle, who happens to be my nephew.

What a play!

For those of you who may have been watching another, less satisfying game last night, let me set the scene.

Camp Randall Stadium.

WIAA Division 4 State Championship game.

Two undefeated teams.

With the game tied 0-0 through most of the game, St. Croix finally scored on a one-yard run and kicked the extra point to lead 7-0.

Then, with 12 seconds left in the game, Racine St. Catherine’s versatile quarterback Da’Shaun Brown drove into the end zone from three-yards out to make the score 7-6.

If you were St. Catherine’s Head Coach Dan Miller, what would you do?

Kick an extra point to tie the game?

Or, go for two to win it all?

Miller never blinked.

And, thanks to his bold call, a whole lifetime of Saturday morning Pop Warner games, afternoon practices, early morning weight lifting, sore muscles, dirty uniforms, film study and meetings came down to this one play.

Brown took the snap, senior tackle Guy Van Dis made a textbook block, and Brown scampered into the end zone for the game winning two-point conversion.

With that call, and the defensive stand that followed, Racine St. Catherines became the first team in school history to finish the season with a perfect record.

Congratulations to our nephew Guy and the rest of the St. Catherines Angels.

Thanks for showing us how exciting a well-played Thursday night football game can be.

The Guy Van Dis cheering squad included his Uncle Mark, Grandpa Ben, Dad Steve, Mom Nancy, Vince and me.

I think it was particularly cool that Guy’s grandpa came all the way from Holland Michigan to watch the game.

Ay yi yi. Please pardon my hat head. I’m only including this picture because I’m so proud of good ole number 66. (Now, can I borrow your helmet? ha ha)

Check out number 66 in the right corner of this picture blocking to the whistle. When you have a quarterback as wily as Brown, you have to hold your blocks for a very long time.

St. Catherines wins! So exciting! Congratulations to both teams for their excellent seasons and an extremely well-played football game.

  1. I’m a weeny — I always vote to go for the tie and hope for the best with OT. My husband thinks totally opposite — his thought is you lose if you don’t go for the win.
