It’s good to be home

If felt good to be home Sunday as we rolled up to our tailgate spot and greeted friends we had not seen since Jan. 3 of last year.

The weather for this game proved much more accommodating and so did the Lions. We mingled a bit, munched a bit more, and strategized our game-day gear. Rain coat or jacket? Most of us guessed wrong and ended up sweating our way through a toasty, but thankfully dry, game.

With no home playoff game last season, it had been a while since we had tailgated at Lambeau Field, and we were happy to be back. Everything tastes better in Lambeau’s shadow.

Eventually, and in plenty of time for the national anthem and F-16 flyover, my sister Kathy and I made our way to section 117. That felt like home too.

Always, the seats directly to our left go to fans of the visiting team. This game was no exception. I chatted at length with Lauren, who covered all her bases by wearing Detroit pajamas and a Cheesehead.

It felt like a perfect Sunday at Lambeau as the Packers jumped out to a 28-point lead, and, despite some second half let-up, I’m sticking with that assessment.

The bye week comes a little early for my taste, but we’ll take it and hope it brings back the likes of Clay Matthews, Sam Shields, Morgan Burnett and Datone Jones.

We’re already fired up for our next trip to Lambeau , where we’ll take on the Giants in a 7:30 p.m. game. Despite the NFL’s unkind schedule (come on, Roger, only three noon Sunday games?), we’re looking forward to kicking back with 78,000 of our closest friends and enjoying our time in Titletown.

Packer tailgates are the best kind of homecomings. This is our daughter Katherine and her beloved mentor, Susan Sweeney, theatre professor extraordinaire and avid Packer fan, getting their picture taken by Susan’s brother Jim.

  1. Henry Jordan’s nieces and nephews were at the game too. Would liked to have met you.  Great game.
