We’d like to thank the Academy for this opportunity to bond

Last night from three different states, a tri-generational team of Oscar fans settled in to watch the show, noting fashion choices, applauding speeches and analyzing choices via telephone and text.

From the party she hosted in Chicago, complete with Oscar topped cupcakes and champagne cocktails, Katherine dressed in costume.

By contrast, I jammied up early and happily tucked myself into the warm comfort of my Wisconsin bedroom with a hot cup of tea to watch the festivities. In sunny Florida, Grandma Peggy, who had been to matinée showings of nearly all of the nominated films, turned up her air conditioning and settled in to enjoy the show.

It turns out, 2014 is a big year for our little team as each member is celebrating a milestone birthday. Grandma Peggy turned 75 in January, I’ll be 50 in April, and Katherine celebrates her 25th birthday today.

According to our matriarch, there’s precedence for this kind of trio. Grandma Peggy turned 25 during her father Bob Fey’s 50th year and her Grandma Estelle Fey’s 75th year.

“Isn’t that cool?” she asked when she mentioned this statistical anomaly.

“Very cool,” I said. “For Katherine.”

I can’t say I’m thrilled to have notched a half century, but I intend to rally my optimism in time for the big day.

In the meantime, I’m happy to salute the youngest member of our trio. As has been her great fortune and determined habit, Katherine will be celebrating her birthday on stage tonight in the company of her Second City actors and friends.

From 1,200 miles away, as has been her great fortune and determined habit, her grandmother will lead the applause.

We’d like to thank the Academy for this opportunity to celebrate our bond. We look forward the next 25 years.
