U-Rah-Rah Wisconsin

When the New Year dawns so cold that an icy crust forms on our lovely snow and the frigid air steals our breath, we like to distract ourselves with a little Wisconsin tradition we call the Rose Bowl.

With its twin themes of celebration and football, the Rose Bowl serves as the perfect party incentive for a state that prides itself on both. Those roses are, after all, Badger red and, even though we didn’t actually win the football game, we spent a solid four quarters battling hard…and our band rocked.

We were lucky enough to attend a Rose Bowl party this year hosted by a Wisconsin band alumna in a room full of Badger memorabilia collected by a family that once boasted three tuba players, all siblings, in a single Badger band.

From the white swirls on the pretty Badger cake to the genuine Badger band beans, this party commemorated the occasion with style.

It would have been nice to win the football game. But from our little frozen corner of the world, we’re grateful for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in another football tradition that, through the years, has brought us so much joy.

See you next year!

Here’s Vince and our hostess with the mostess Mindy-the-Badger-tuba-player, quite possibly the world’s cutest tuba player.

Homemade Badger candles and a couple of albums commemorating past Rose Bowls were a nice touch.

Naturally, there were roses, but I also liked the stuffed Badger poised to eat the Wisconsin pretzels.
