When Grandpa lands in LaLa Land

Babies sleep best when they’re curled up on their grandpa’s chest.

I think it has something to do with the size of the hand cupping them there. Or maybe it’s the slow, steady rhythm of breath. “I’m here.” “You’re safe.” “You’re loved.”

Magic happens at the intersection of that long, meandering lifeline and the fresh new one. It’s a reciprocal peace.

Grandpa Toes landed in LaLa Land this week to meet the newest family member. We tag-teamed our visits this time, which meant we each got to soak in as much baby time as our old hearts could take.

As it turns, that’s a lot.

“First shift!” he texted each morning with adorable pictures of the little snuggle bunny burrowed into his chest.

He sent pictures of his other charge, Benny the Wonder Dog, too. I know those two buddies enjoyed their hang.

But the little bundle of baby, with her myriad expressions, stole the show.

He’s headed back to Wisconsin today, and we’re counting the hours until all our little granddaughters can join us here in Wisconsin for a summer reunion.

What a joyous occasion that will be!
