A breath of fresh air

Spring came to Wisconsin this weekend like a breath of fresh air.

I sat outside with a couple of my crocus friends yesterday afternoon and gulped it in. We binge on spring here, when it comes. We have to. It’s one of the Midwest’s most fleeting treats.

The staccato sounds of summer — pickle ball pings, skateboard screeches, playground giggles — scored our afternoon together, and it all sounded like hope.

On Saturday, I took a long, long walk along the river. I criss-crossed it several times by way of bridges and trestles. The hardiest of Wisconsin’s flowers popped up to greet me, and we all agreed that we were the luckiest souls on the planet to live alongside the glorious Fox.

Buds peeked out from snoozing trees and the first brave blades of grass poked through the ground. I wanted to high five them all.

We are not immune from challenges here, where the specter of winter hovers through most of our days. That’s why we celebrate the good days so thoroughly.

There’s snow in Tuesday’s forecast, and that’s okay.

Because, our little tree buds are strong, our bulbs are hardy and we know that there are sunnier days ahead.

I think spring flowers are the most beautiful because they have to find their own way in a colorless world.
Don’t you admire the crocus? I’m not sure there’s a stronger, more dependable flower.
Those buds look tender but they’re about to endure another Wisconsin spring snow shower, and they’ll rock it.
These buds will rock any season too, and I’m grateful for them every day of my life.
Until spring actually takes hold in Wisconsin, I’m relying on my indoor planter, where my bulbs are blooming. How exciting is that?
