February’s extra day

I think my face might have been a little sunburned from my delightfully warm walk along the river, because it really hurt when the wind whipped icy pellets at it the next morning as I scraped a thick frost off my windshield.

“Come on, Wisconsin!” I yelled. “You’re better than this!”

From T-shirts on Tuesday to woolies on Wednesday, I’ll say this for my favorite state, it does not skimp on the weather. In fact, it can dish out all four seasons in a single day.

Yikes.

Did we really need an extra day of February? Why can’t we have Leap Days in July?

These are things I pondered as I shivered my way through Leap Day.

Then, I wrote this:

February’s Extra Day

March never knows just what to say

to February’s extra day.

Will it cramp spring’s fresh, green style

if February stays a while?

The icy sleet, those slippery feet.

The words we really can’t repeat.

Maybe March just needs a vow

that spring will show up anyhow.

And maybe we’d all love those Leaps

if sunny days would stay for keeps.

If you’re a weather enthusiast, come to Wisconsin. You can experience all four seasons in a single afternoon.

And if you want a little cheering up, enjoy this tiny snowman with the brussel sprout eyes made by my friend Daisy.

And for your Leap Year pleasure, here’s a series of my favorite leaping photos…

Leaping Vinnie!
Leaping Laura!
Leaping Molly!
Leaping Charlie!
Leaping Katherine!
Leaping Joseph!
Leaping cutie!
Leaping cutie!
Leaping cutie!
And that time two of us leapt and one of us thought we had lost our minds and five of us posed for an entirely different picture.
