We all got a taste of summer Friday night in downtown Appleton on a street flowing with happy people, tasty food, good music, a little magic, a lot of sunshine, and some unexpected literary encouragement.
I loved it all.
A red dragon weaved in and out of the crowd that included stilt walkers, fairies, fire dancers and a bunch of friends I had not seen in a while.
The whole scene felt like the very best parts of summer in Wisconsin, also known as paradise to those of us lucky enough to have experienced it.
Having been cooped up all winter, folks flocked to the Avenue. Long lines stretched from every food truck, but with so many street performers, no one seemed to mind the wait.
I also saw lines waiting at the book mobile, an impressive addition to a scene that also featured a blind dating book tent.
You have to love a festival that encourages its attendees to read.
Summer unofficially kicks off next weekend, and I hope to spend a good chunk of it downtown. Thank you to Appleton Downtown Incorporated for making the space so hospitable.
Here’s to summer 2026! Bring on the outdoor yoga, live music, farmer’s markets, al fresco dining, festivals and fun!
Let’s go!
