The seasons have been especially capricious this year.
Just as summer faded into fall, it popped back up for three or four encores.
Spring taunted us early, then left in a huff, slunk back and disappeared again.
So, it does not surprise me that our first snowfall of the year faded pretty quickly into mush. And, it would neither surprise nor disappoint me if summer snuck back for another long, dramatic bow.
Fall got a little cheated this year and I’m guessing it doesn’t want to cede the spotlight just yet. Seasonal rivalry can be challenging, especially for those middle months.
And, as for us, we have to carpe all the diems, right?
I welcomed this first snowfall, like I do the first one every year. If nothing else, it gave me the opportunity to pull out my big winter coat and discover the reading glasses I’d left in the pocket seven months ago.
But, even more than that, it gave us a little taste of all the fun and excitement ahead — the snowmen, sled rides, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowball fights, snow forts and cozy snow days.
Each season offers its own magic. Their fleetingness makes them even more precious.
I built a little snowman yesterday (after singing that catchy little tune from Frozen and earning a very predictable and resounding No! from my young captive audience).
Today, I’ll splash through the puddles left behind.
I think we’re lucky to live in a multi-season state and I look forward to celebrating all of them.
