Friday Faves — Christmas Stars (featuring my friend Mrs. Claus)

November has always been a busy time of year for my friend Mrs. Claus, and this year is no exception.

In fact, 2020 has presented her with even more challenges — how to keep the big guy healthy enough to circle the globe on Christmas Eve, how to convince those elves to keep their masks on in the workshop and how to bring the magic of Christmas safely to a world that so desperately needs a little joy.

With that last one, Mrs. Claus has a little help.

For the past 19 years, Mrs. Claus has been a featured performer in Xavier High School’s holiday extravaganza, Christmas Stars. The show offers an enticing combination of adorable and inspirational numbers. Every time I’ve ever attended, I’ve rushed to my seat in a flurry of holiday angst and Christmas to-do’s and I’ve left with a heart full of Christmas magic and peace.

This year, with that Grinch Covid-19 hovering, Mrs. Claus and Christmas Stars have come up with a new way to welcome Christmas, Christmas day.

For a mere $13 per household, you can purchase a streaming code to one of 40 show choices.

“We have been doing safe rehearsals and recordings over the last couple months and through the magic of technology, it will turn into a one hour performance,” said Mrs. Claus (Kathie Shadick, when I asked her last night.)

The beauty of this setup is that my mom, my sisters and I can all chose a show and watch together but from the comfort and safety of our own living rooms, which we plan to do. I think it will be a nice little holiday treat for us all.

If you’re looking for a little holiday spirit at a very reasonable price, please check out Christmas Stars.

And, if you know of any similarly accessible Christmas shows, please let me know.

Thank you to Mrs. Claus and her husband ole watshisname for all these years of Christmas joy.

And, to that grinchiest Grinch Covid, we say:

Fah who foraze! Dah who doraze!
Welcome Christmas, come this way!
Fah who foraze! Dah who doraze!
Welcome Christmas, Christmas Day!

My friend Mrs. Claus (Kathie Shadick) and her granddaughter Meghan, who will also be performing in Christmas Stars this year.
Mrs. Claus and her grandson Patrick, also a performer this year.
Mrs. Claus and her oldest grandson Brendan, another Christmas Stars performer. Quite a talented family, no?
This is Mrs. Claus and her dad, who we call Mayor Tom, and his wife Pat.
Have I mentioned that I’m friends with Mrs. Claus? #namedropper

  1. Check out the Knights on Broadway, the St. Norbert College swing choir, Christmas Concert. I went for the first time two years ago.
