Enchanted April

Meteorologists use scientific phrases like rising dew points and a waning gibbous  to describe the spectacular weekend we finally enjoyed here in the Midwest.

But I prefer a more whimsical approach. After 25 straight cold, grey days, I like to think we finally earned ourselves an Enchanted April, which is not coincidentally the name of the play we saw to cap off a perfect girls’ weekend.

We rose with the sun Saturday morning, the sun! Rubbing our eyes in glorious wonder, we turned our pale faces directly into its Vitamin D infused light and we walked. Katherine and I strolled the streets of Chicago for hours, scored by the springtime sounds of aluminum bats, barking dogs and laughing children.

We sipped margaritas and munched tacos at an outdoor stand, where we might have spent the rest of the day had it not been for the true draw of our enchanted April weekend, Katherine’s six lively aunts and her livelier Grandma Mary Jane.

So, we headed downtown where, with love and laughter, we toasted and tasted during a three generational Girls’ Night Out that lasted well into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

With two grandmas, 11 aunts and seven female cousins, Katherine and Molly belong to a healthy sorority of busy women with whom we gratefully pause from time to time to celebrate life and each other.

Here’s a shot of the Enchanted April cast. This genuinely delightful show runs through May 26 at the Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Here’s the enchanted Katherine in action, regally ignoring the sound of her mother’s clicking camera. I’d feel bad, but I really like this shot.
Is there anything better than a full playground on a Saturday afternoon?
My lunch was as beautiful as it was delicious. I can’t wait to recreate these.
We would have whiled away the entire afternoon with these beauties, but an even more appealing group of people were waiting for us.
I bonded with Mr. Wicker because I appreciate a man who sweeps.
Katherine, Grandma Mary Jane and a selection of the finest aunts you’ll ever see.
This isn’t the clearest picture, but I got a kick out of the way my sister in-law Melissa handled the imposing maitre ‘d. She negotiated a lovely table for our party of nine.
Daffodils and magnolias herald the last weekend of an Enchanted April.
