Molly’s B and B (A post by Molly)

Congratulations! You’ve just decided to open your very own B & B, and without any experience you’ve agreed to host a music group of ten college boys. Let’s face it you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. No need to fear, though, Molly’s B & B is here to help you.

First, go to the mattresses — air mattresses, mattress toppers, and the old twin bed mattresses your brothers used to use on their bunk beds. Spread them out throughout the house and top them with whatever bedding you can find. We didn’t end up using the pink Barbie sleeping bag, but we had it on hand just in case.

When your guests arrive they’ll spill out of their car like clowns at a circus; they’ll just keep coming through the door. Greet them calmly and try not to be alarmed by the smell of boy overcoming your house, this will fade… probably.

Because the boys are in a singing group, tea and honey are a must. Be prepared to accommodate such conditions as lactose-intolerance and such preferences as vegetarians.  Bake them cookies and corn bread to make them feel welcome. Give them quick breakfasts so they can make it to their morning shows. And tiptoe quietly through the house in the afternoon, when they get some much-needed shut-eye.

Be patient, especially when you realize those 10 extra lap tops are slowing your WiFi network to a teeth grinding crawl. And when someone steps on your power adapter leaving you unable to charge your own lap top, keep a cool head and come to terms with the fact that you may be a day late in posting to your blog while you run around town trying to find a replacement adapter.

At the end of the day your living room  might look as tidy as a frat house, but that will make your collegiate guests feel right at home.

In return your guests will be courteous and kind, complimenting your soup and bread with words like “scrumptious” and “delectable”. After dinner a few might even offer to help with the dishes. And if you’re as lucky as we were, they’ll treat you to a few pre-show songs. We’re hoping to open Molly’s B & B up to them next year. Enjoy a taste of the music we got to hear in our living room yesterday…

And here’s a little taste of the concert at Lawrence University Saturday night:

  1. You actually had me laughing out loud! With four boys of my own – you pretty much just described my house on a daily basis. When a sleep over happens – this IS my house! The smell and wi-fi in particular! I may not get such great music out of it, but I do get free manual labor. 😉

Thank you for the laugh and sharing their talent!
